BUCHANAN, MI – November 2, 2020 – Honor Credit Union is proud to announce its partnership with Michigan Gateway Community Foundation to continue its Kickstart to Career program. The program, managed by the Michigan Gateway Community Foundation with partner support from Honor and Buchanan Community Schools, provides Buchanan kindergartners with a free $50 College Savings Account at Honor Credit Union.
As part of the Buchanan Promise, Kickstart to Career began in 2018 and is a program designed to assist Buchanan students with post-secondary education expenses. Each student attending kindergarten within the Buchanan Community School District is automatically the beneficiary of a College Savings Account at Honor. Accounts are opened every November for all new kindergarteners and begin with a $50 deposit from Michigan Gateway Community Foundation. Upon account opening, each student will receive an Honor Credit Union membership card and a souvenir piggy bank.
“I’m thrilled to partner with Michigan Gateway Community Foundation’s Kickstart to Career program,” commented Karol Behrle, Honor’s Community Assistant Vice President. “At Honor, we strongly believe in equipping our future leaders with the tools they will need to be financially successful. Kickstart to Career provides the perfect opportunity for Buchanan students to grow their college savings fund. By starting this program at a young age, students learn financial literacy skills for a successful future.”
“We are very excited to partner with Honor Credit Union, an organization that shares our same community values and commitment to youth,” commented Jennifer Popielski, Kickstart To Career Coordinator at Michigan Gateway Community Foundation. “This partnership will enable us to meet the goals of our Kickstart to Career program to build savings habits, provide financial literacy, and encourage future aspirations leading to prosperity for our students and families.”
Existing Kickstart to Career College Savings Accounts, previously held at TCF Bank (Chemical Bank), are accessible at Honor Credit Union. Additional deposits to the College Savings Accounts are encouraged and will be accepted at Honor Credit Union’s Buchanan member center. Withdrawals will not be allowed until the student turns 18-years-old. For more information, please visit https://mgcf.org/kickstart-to-careers/.
